Activities of session 1 (Jan 18, 2012)

Report on your present or previous experiences in the workplace. How best would you describe how your organisation lernt?

  1. Since I am a stay at home mom and I did not have any experiences working in a school, I am going to do this project on my husband's school. The organisation that I am reporting is American International school. According to the five learning disciplines from "School that learn", the high school principle in American International School has personal mastery. His vision is to create the best learning environment for the teachers and students. He is major part of hiring for teachers and to interview every students who wish to joint the school. He makes sure that teachers and students who joint the school shared the school vision. All of the teachers and administrators have shared vision for the future of the school. They work to achieve the goals set by WASC to fulfill the requirements for accreditation and make sure the school provide the best learning results. In terms of mental models, the administration does not open about certain subjects. Staffs can openly expressive among each other, but not with the administration. Team learning has been fostered between the teachers but not with the administrations and other staffs. However, the school also has parent-teacher association which allows the team learning to be fostered. In terms of systems thinking, students are able to gain broader and deeper knowledge by simulations such ICT and effective teaching techniques. Many students are able to obtain very high scores in AP and other subjects.

  2. In my working place, a primary school, we formed some subject groups to discuss the year plan of different subjects such as Chinese, English, Mathematics and General Studies. In the mid-term, we will evaluate the activities in the plan. We would write down the verbal comment and grade the activities. The mark is from 0-7. The higher mark means the objective of the activity can be achieved. The improvement and the adjustment of the activities would be made after the meeting. We hope that the adjustment can make the plan work out and get the higher mark at the end of the school year.
    The weekly subject meeting from p.1 to p.6, the subject teachers will discuss about the last week’s lesson, find out the problem and improve the teaching strategy. Sometimes, the Principal or the Curriculum Development Officer would attend the meeting.
    The continuous meeting and evaluating system would make my organization learning.
    Beyond the subjects, our leader of the school, the Principal always show the Personal Mastery before us. She always shares her religion and lifestyles to us. She would share the organic food to us to make us think about the important of health. In the meeting, the higher priority of the benefit of the children is considered. After a year, we all staffs are affected by her Shared Vision. When we make decisions, we understand the most important consideration is the benefit of the children, we think in the same direction.
